The Week in Review

It was a pretty good week, starting with the root canal on Monday and then followed by a 14 inning Cardinal baseball game in St. Louis on Tuesday evening. They set a record for using the most players in one game - 53 - and a record for using the most pitchers - something like 10 for one team and 11 for the other. We had great field box seats along the third base side. Of course, when you sit there you must be ever-mindful of the line drive that might knock your head off. There was this woman bouncing a baby on her knee across the aisle from us. My sister and I were nervous about the baby getting hit in the head by a foul ball so we sat poised to hurl our bodies in that direction if need be.....okay, she, being younger and quicker was going to hurl, and I was going to scream and push her over there. The bad news is that the Cardinals lost the game to the Phillies, but the good news is that the new stadium is wonderful and the baby lived to see another ballgame!




Yard Sale on Diamond Street
I helped Stormy with her yard sale on Saturday morning. It was all her stuff, but I did bring a couple holiday items and some shoes. Here I am featuring some of the items. I have a green depression glass measuring cup and one of those thingies that measures your fat. Note that it is still in the package. ( We already have a good idea about our fat measurement)

Here we are at our checkout table, It was built by Grandma Pat's dad, Great Grandpa Schmidt. It was pretty cold so we wore the boys' band jackets, (they were for sale) We thought they made us look fat, so we made Bob take two pictures. See - we don't need no stinking fat-measuring thingie









Sunday Dinner
It is my goal to have more people for Sunday dinner, and we have been doing that lately. We were going to have our neighbors but they couldn't make it, so it was just us. I did fix Eggplant Parmesan for Bob, because he loves it and I had never made it before, so at least we tried something new, even if we didn't have company. I also made, possibly, the best apple pie I've ever made. You know what they say about men and pie. Men love pie because pie is simple and men are simple.
You can't go wrong with the pie if you master the pie crust. The recipe below is from the Mayberry Cookbook. I use it all the time. I know many pie bakers think that a store-bought crust is fine, but as for me and my house, we will make our own pie crusts!

Opie's No-fail Pie Dough
3 cups flour
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 1/2 tsp. salt
6 Tblsp. cold water
2 Tblsp sugar
1 Tblsp. vinegar
1 1/4 cups shortening
Combine flour, sugar, and salt and cut in shortening until crumbly. Beat the egg. Add water and vinegar to the egg and blend into the flour mixture. Do not overwork. Let the crust rest for about ten minutes. (I put it in the refrigerator).
